UK Premier Grilled By Parliamentary Committee Amid Resignations

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was grilled by MPs in a parliamentary hearing on Wednesday as his government continues to be rocked by resignations in protest at his continued leadership.

At the hearing, Conservative MP Sir Bob Neil asked Johnson: "How important is the truth to you, prime minister?"

"Very important, Bob," Johnson replied.

Labour MP Darren Jones asked Johnson: "On a very human level, surely you must know it's in the country's interests for you to leave now, isn't it?"

Johnson replied: "I can't for the life of me see how it is responsible to walk away from that, particularly when you have a mandate we won two or three years ago."

The premier also indicated he had no intention of resigning, and downplayed – without explicitly ruling out – an early general election.

Sir Bernard Jenkin, a Conservative MP, asked him: "How much consideration are you giving to the prospect of your resignation?"

Johnson said: "I'm happy to tell you that I'm getting on with the job that I was elected to do and that is what I'm going to do."

So far, 35 MPs have resigned from government since Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid resigned from the government.

The political turbulence comes after months of political scandals that have rocked Johnson's government and his personal popularity both within his own political party and the public. -
