UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that Russia would face severe consequences if it violates a potential peace agreement to be reached in Ukraine, saying, "Putin needs to clearly understand that crossing the lines will have serious consequences."
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with senior military officials from around 30 countries at the Northwood military base in northwest London. The meeting discussed how the soldiers to be deployed in Ukraine under a peace agreement could contribute to ensuring the security of the country.
At the meeting attended by military officials from countries ready to send peacekeeping forces to Ukraine after a potential peace agreement, referred to as the "coalition of volunteers," UK Defense Minister John Healey was also present.
THREAT TO RUSSIA
In a statement after the meeting, Prime Minister Starmer expressed that security measures need to be taken for an agreement that would stop the war between Russia and Ukraine to be permanent. Emphasizing that the UK and its allies have moved from the "political negotiation" phase to the "military planning" phase, Starmer stated that planning needs to be "done immediately" before a peace agreement is reached.
Starmer said, "The purpose of the security arrangements is to clearly show Russia that it will face severe consequences if it violates an agreement reached," adding, "For this, the US also needs to be part of it. Because Putin needs to clearly understand that crossing the lines will have serious consequences. The aim of this plan is to maintain peace, as we have in Estonia and other countries where we are deployed."
Starmer stated, "It is extremely important that we do this work because there is one thing we know for sure. An agreement without guarantees will be violated by Putin. We know this because it has happened before. I have no doubt that it will happen again."
WHAT HAPPENED?
Before today's meeting, Starmer visited Barrow Port in the northwest of the country, where nuclear submarines are being built. By visiting a nuclear-armed submarine, Starmer became the first British leader to board a Vanguard-class submarine in over a decade.
The UK press reported that the images of Starmer visiting the heavily guarded nuclear submarine sent a message to Moscow. During the visit, Starmer stated that today's discussions would focus on how to keep the skies, seas, and borders secure in Ukraine. Earlier this month, the UK also organized a similar summit with the participation of 26 countries.
