UK Remembers Victims On Westminster Attack Anniversary

22.03.2018 16:58

Five were killed, 40 wounded during attack.

A commemorative service marked the first anniversary of the deadly terror attack on Thursday, which targeted Westminster and killed five people.

A minute of silence was observed at the House of Commons in the morning.

A ceremony at the Westminster Hall saw the attendance of Parliament Speaker John Bercow and MPs from all parties, as well as the representatives of community leaders and faith leaders.

Five people were killed on March 22, 2017 and 40 others injured in a terror attack in the U.K.'s capital.

Khalid Masood, 52, drove into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, killing four victims and injuring dozens before attacking and fatally injuring a police officer in the Old Palace Yard, the courtyard directly outside parliament.

Police Constable Keith Palmer, 48, who was on duty at the parliament's gate at the time of the attack, was stabbed to death by Masood, who was then shot dead by police.

"Later today, the phrase #LondonUnited will be projected onto the Houses of Parliament, the first of four commemorations of terrorist attacks on London in 2017," a statement from the parliament said.

"The projection, co-ordinated by the Mayor of London's Office, will be repeated at London Bridge, Finsbury Park Mosque and Parsons Green tube station to mark the anniversaries of attacks at those locations later in the year," it said.

In terror attacks targeting London and Manchester, 36 people were killed and scores of others injured in 2017. -
