Update - 1 Killed İn Kenya Protest

One demonstrator was killed on Monday during a protest that was held in Kenya's Narok County.



"I can confirm that police shot one [person] dead in the demonstration we organized today," Senator Stephen Ole Ntutu told The Anadolu Agency.



Ntutu said ten people had also been injured.



Hundreds had reportedly gathered on the streets of Narok town on Monday to demonstrate against alleged corruption and the misappropriation of funds by the local government.



According to Senator Ntutu, police used live ammunition to disperse demonstrators.



"We regret that one demonstrator was killed with what we have confirmed to have been a stray bullet," Narok County Deputy Police Chief Paul Cheruiyot told AA.



"Our officers were shooting in the air to disperse the demonstrators," he said. "Those were warning shots and in no instance did the officers shoot directly on demonstrators."



Cheruiyot insisted that the demonstration was illegal and police adhered to orders from the office of Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Nkaissery.



Nkaissery had banned the planned demonstration.



"It is regrettable that instead of local leaders following laid down legal procedures for dealing with alleged corruption, they chose unnecessary confrontation," he said in a subsequent statement.



"To ensure that law and order is maintained, police have been directed to commence investigations with immediate effect and charge those found culpable," Nkaissery added.



Narok Police Chief Paul Letting was seriously injured in the melee and has since been hospitalized.



Narok is one of Kenya's richest counties, with most of its revenues generated though the world-famous Masai Mara game park.



However, there have been concerns by local residents over the management of the revenues.
