Turkish security forces killed nine PKK terrorists in two airstrikes in southeastern Turkey and another in northern Iraq on Friday, according to local government and military officials.

In a statement, the governor's office in Siirt province said gendarmerie and police units killed three PKK terrorists in an airstrike in Cevrimtepe village in Baykan district.

The slain terrorists were suspected to be behind the assassination attempt on Baykan district head Mehmet Kocabey on July 7 and the martyrdom of Hakkari province's Cukurca district gendarmerie station commander, Staff Sgt. Yakup Akdag, on July 24.

Later, in a news conference, Siirt Governor Ali Fuat Atik said that one of the terrorists killed was a former Siirt Municipality employee, who was later laid off by a government-appointed trustee.

In another statement, Turkish Armed Forces said three PKK terrorists were killed in a separate airstrike in Karadag area in Hakkari's Semdinli district.

Later on Friday, three more terrorists were killed in a cross-border air operation in Avasin-Basyan region in northern Iraq, the military said.

The airstrikes also destroyed ammunition depots used by the terror group, it added.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU, resumed its armed campaign against Turkey in July 2015.

Since then, it has been responsible for the deaths of more than 1,200 Turkish security personnel and civilians. -
