Us: Driver Charged After 10 Undocumented İmmigrants Die

24.07.2017 21:28

A truck driver was charged Monday, accused of participating in a human smuggling effort that led to the deaths of 10 undocumented immigrants.

James Mathew Bradley Jr., 60, could face the death penalty or life imprisonment after eight victims died in the back of his truck in San Antonio, Texas, as temperatures soared above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius).

Two others died while receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

Bradley was arrested Sunday, shortly after law enforcement came upon his vehicle, and now faces one charge of transporting undocumented migrants. The law provides for an unlimited prison sentence or capital punishment if the crime results in death.

Authorities discovered the grisly scene after they inspected Bradley's truck in a Walmart parking lot. The truck lacked air conditioning and water, and 30 other victims had to receive treatment for heat stroke and exhaustion.

At least 20 people were in serious condition, according to U.S. Attorney Richard L. Durbin, Jr.

"All were victims of ruthless human smugglers indifferent to the well-being of their fragile cargo," he said Sunday. "These people were helpless in the hands of their transporters. Imagine their suffering, trapped in a stifling trailer in 100-plus degree heat."

Bradley has denied knowing of the contents in his truck, and said he only became aware that he was transporting the victims after he exited to use the restroom.

Between 30-40 others ran from the truck trailer when he opened the doors upon hearing banging and screaming within. -
