US Urges Americans To 'Reconsider Travel' To Ecuador

'Reconsider travel to Ecuador due to civil unrest and crime. Some areas have increased risk': State Dept.

The US State Department urged Americans on Wednesday to reconsider travel to Ecuador, citing crime and demonstrations in the South American country.
"Reconsider travel to Ecuador due to civil unrest and crime. Some areas have increased risk," according to a travel advisory by the department.
The agency urged Americans not to travel to the provinces of Carchi, Sucumbios and the north of Esmeraldas, including the city of Esmeraldas, as well as Guayaquil, south of Portete de Tarqui Avenue, due to crime.
"Crime is a widespread problem in Ecuador. Violent crime, such as murder, assault, express kidnapping, and armed robbery, is common," said the warning, adding that transnational criminal organizations and gangs operate in the regions named.
"Demonstrations occur regularly throughout the country. Public demonstrations can take place for a variety of political and economic issues," it said and warned that protests can disrupt public transportation.
Ecuador has seen major protests in recent weeks by Indigenous community members who were asking President Guillermo Lasso to lower the prices of gasoline and agricultural goods, reverse the privatization of public services and stop additional oil and mining development, among other concessions. -
