In this week's street interview series, we asked the question, 'What should the minimum wage be?'
WHAT DOES THE PEOPLE OF ÜSKÜDAR EXPECT FOR THE MINIMUM WAGE?
In the interviews we conducted on the streets of Üsküdar, we asked citizens, "What is your expectation for the minimum wage?" The responses revealed that the public has high expectations in the face of rising living costs. Some citizens argue that the minimum wage should be increased even more according to living conditions.
MINIMUM WAGE SHOULD BE 30,000 TL
In the interview, many citizens stated that the minimum wage should be at least 25,000 – 30,000 TL. One citizen said, "It should not be below 30,000 TL, because purchasing power has become very difficult," emphasizing that life is increasingly challenging under current conditions. Another person sharing the same view stated, "Rent prices already start at 25,000 TL, and it is impossible to sustain this life with a minimum wage of 17,000 TL," expressing the inadequacy of economic conditions.
RENT AND LIVING STRUGGLE
The people of Üsküdar particularly point out that rent prices seriously affect the minimum wage. One citizen said, "It needs to be at least 25,000 TL, because rent increases and prices in supermarkets lead to serious living difficulties." Another summarized the situation by stating, "For those living in rented accommodation, it should be at least 40,000 TL, because it is very difficult to make ends meet with such high prices."
HIGH EXPECTATIONS IN THE FACE OF RISING LIVING COSTS
In the interviews, many citizens believe that the minimum wage should be increased within the capabilities of the government. One person stated, "The cost of living is very high in a place like Istanbul. The minimum wage needs to be at least 25,000 TL," drawing attention to how difficult living conditions are. Especially in large cities, the rising cost of living has further increased expectations for the minimum wage.
