The Minister of Communication, Fahrettin Altun, expressed that the condolence messages he shared after the assassination attempt on Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh were censored, following which the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) imposed a ban on accessing the social media platform Instagram, which has billions of users. "WE ALSO WANT TO RESOLVE THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE"The popular platform has been closed for a week, and when it will reopen is a matter of great curiosity. Today, when asked about the issue, the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, stated that discussions are ongoing, saying, "We are constantly in communication with Instagram and other social media platforms. We had informed them beforehand. There are also issues that we have informed them about in the recent process. What are these? We have 'catalog crimes' and 'sensitivities of our society and country.' We constantly inform them. Yesterday, our colleagues re-evaluated it, and we have come to a certain point. We also really want to resolve this as soon as possible." MEETING WITH META OFFICIALSWhile the ban on accessing Instagram continues, a critical meeting was held between bureaucrats from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and officials from META on Monday. The meeting, which started at 13:00, ended at 19:00. In addition to the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, Deputy Minister Ömer Fatih Sayan and officials from the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) also attended the meeting. "ALGORITHM" DEFENSE FROM METAIn the meeting, Turkey's requests regarding content that violates catalog crimes and the sensitivities of society were once again expressed. In particular, criticism was directed at META for the condolence messages published for Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh being blocked by algorithms. META defended itself by stating that the US recognizes Hamas as a terrorist organization and that algorithms come into play within this framework. SENSITIVE CONTENT LIST WAS PRESENTEDIn the meeting, the delegation led by Uraloğlu stated that messages of support for PKK, PYD, and FETÖ, which are listed as terrorist organizations in Turkey, should also be blocked by algorithms. It was stated that META gave the green light regarding the PKK, and a list of content that Turkey requested to be removed from the platform was also presented to the company.
