World Cup: Brave Iceland Secure Draw Against Argentina

16.06.2018 19:43

Messi penalty saved by Iceland's film director goalkeeper Halldorsson in second half.

World Cup's smallest ever country Iceland managed to draw against Argentina 1-1 in the Group D match in Moscow on Saturday afternoon.

The match at Spartak Stadium saw two goals within five minutes of the first half.

Sergio Aguero scored a superb opener for the South American team in the 19th minute, when he shot an unstoppable left-footer high into the net.

Iceland was able to reply back in the 23rd minute when Alfred Finnbogason cleared Argentinian defense inside the penalty box.

The real drama happened in the 64th minute, when superstar Lionel Messi's penalty kick was saved by Iceland's goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson. The goalkeeper managed to make a great dive to his right to prevent Messi from enjoying his first goal in Russia 2018.

Halldorsson, who is also a part-time film director and editor, is responsible for Iceland's 2012 Eurovision Song Contest entry "Never Forget" and a latest commercial for the Iceland national football team ahead of the World Cup.

The goalkeeper became an instant hero for his team after his save, giving his country first ever World Cup point.

The other match of the Group C will be played by Croatia and Nigeria at 1900GMT at Kaliningrad Stadium. -
