At least 23 Islamic State of Iraq and Levant-led militants were killed Thursday during a military operation in the city of Fallujah, according to an Iraqi Lieutenant General Rashid Felih.
Wissam Al-Isawi, a medic at Fallujah State Hospital, said one body was brought to the hospital as well as three who were injured.
Meanwhile, six people were wounded in a mortar attack in Anbar province, according to security sources.
The violence has escalated since early June after a coalition of armed insurgent groups led by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, (ISIL) took control of large swathes of the country's predominantly Sunni provinces.
The conflict between the army and militants entered a new stage last month when insurgents captured a number of key cities and towns in Iraq.
The Iraqi army has staged military operations against ISIL-led militants.
