The English Football Association suspended Friday Chelsea's Spanish striker Diego Costa for three matches.
The association examined video footage of Costa stepping on the foot of Liverpool's Turkish-German footballer Emre Can during the League Cup semi-final Tuesday and decided to ban him for three games.
Costa, 26, will miss his team's Premier League matches against Manchester City, Aston Villa and Everton.
The Blues signed Costa from Spanish Atletico Madrid for £32 million in 2014. He has scored 17 goals in 19 league matches.
Leading the league with 52 points in standings, Chelsea will host Manchester City, which has 47 points so far, at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
