Clashes erupted Friday between Palestinians and Israeli troops in different parts of Jerusalem following a vehicular attack by an Arab youth that left five Israelis wounded.

Several Jerusalem neighborhoods – including Ras al-Amud, Sliwan and Anata – saw clashes between residents and Israeli troops that left at least one Palestinian youth suffering rubber bullet injuries, eyewitnesses told The Anadolu Agency.

Israeli forces also raided the home of Mohamed al-Salameyyah, said to be the perpetrator of the earlier car attack, where they questioned members of his family.

The attack took place near a base for Israeli border police located on the street separating East and West Jerusalem, Israeli police said.

Earlier Friday, Israeli spokesperson Luba Samri said the driver had left the car following the attack and appeared to be holding a knife, at which point police opened fire on him a second time.

The driver suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital where he remains in custody.

Recent months have seen an uptick in violence in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories that have led to several deaths and injuries on both sides.

Several Israelis have been killed or wounded amid increasingly frequent Palestinian attacks on Israelis as tension in the region mounts.

Israeli forces, meanwhile, have continued their attacks on Palestinians and their property in the occupied territories, which have also left several people dead or wounded.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 Middle East War. It annexed the entire city in 1980, claiming it as the capital of the self-proclaimed Jewish state – a move never recognized by the international community.
