Former Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) President Süreyya Serdengeçti passed away at the age of 73. Serdengeçti, who started his career at the Central Bank in 1980, served as the President of the CBRT from 2001 to 2006.



In a post made from the CBRT's X account, it was stated, "We are saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Süreyya Serdengeçti, who served as the President of the Central Bank from 2001 to 2006. We wish him God's mercy and extend our condolences to his family and all his loved ones."



WHO IS SÜREYYA SERDENGEÇTİ?



Born in Istanbul in 1952, Süreyya Serdengeçti completed his primary and secondary education at Mahmutpaşa Primary School and Galatasaray High School in Istanbul. He graduated from the Economics Department of METU in 1979 and began his career in the External Debt Rescheduling Department of the CBRT in 1980.



From 1982 onwards, Serdengeçti worked in the Foreign Exchange Transactions Department and pursued a master's degree in Economics at Vanderbilt University in the USA from 1984 to 1986. Upon returning to Turkey, he continued to work in the management of foreign exchange reserves at the Central Bank, becoming the Foreign Exchange Transactions Manager in 1990 and the Open Market Operations Manager in 1992. In 1994, he was appointed as the Deputy Secretary General and spokesperson. In the same year, he was appointed as the General Director of Foreign Relations and Deputy General Manager, working in the fields of balance of payments and international organizations.



In May 1996, Serdengeçti became the General Manager of Markets, responsible for international reserve management, exchange rates and interventions, interbank money markets, open market operations, and Treasury auctions. From January 1998, in addition to the General Directorate of Markets, he also served as the "Vice President responsible for Credits, Information Technology, and Statistics." He was appointed as the President of the Central Bank on March 14, 2001. Serdengeçti, whose presidency ended on March 14, 2006, handed over his duties to Durmuş Yılmaz.



Fluent in English and French, Serdengeçti had been teaching as a lecturer in the Economics Department of TOBB University of Economics and Technology since 2006.
