Sefer Baygın, the 1972 European Wrestling Champion, passed away in the hospital where he was receiving treatment in Antalya. Baygın, known as one of the important figures in Turkish wrestling history, will be buried tomorrow.
The Turkish Wrestling Federation announced that former national athlete Sefer Baygın has passed away. In the federation's statement, it was stated, "Our national athlete Sefer Baygın, who represented Turkey at the 1972 European Wrestling Championship and became the European champion, and had the honor of representing our country in the 1972 Summer Olympics with the crescent-star jersey, has passed away."
The statement noted that Sefer Baygın, who was born in 1942 in Tokat, started wrestling at Turhal Şekerspor and then continued his career at Sivas Demirspor, where he rose to the national team, stating, "Baygın, who has European championship, Mediterranean Games championship, fifth place in the World Championship, and fourth place in the Olympics in his sports career, is among the important figures in Turkish wrestling history. After his active sports career, Sefer Baygın worked as a coach and contributed to the development of many athletes, especially the late Kırkpınar Başpehlivan Cengiz Elbiya."
It was reported that Sefer Baygın's funeral will be held tomorrow in Antalya. The Turkish Wrestling Federation extended its condolences to Baygın's family, loved ones, and the Turkish wrestling community.
