Two years ago, Bas Dost, who was playing for NEC Nijmegen, suffered a heart attack during a match against AZ Alkmaar. In a statement, he announced that he is retiring from football. The 36-year-old striker, who said he would not be able to return to the pitch, stated, "You don't want to gamble with your life. I thought about it for two weeks and then I made my decision. I have retired from football."
The Dutch forward Bas Dost, who is often associated with Turkish teams, announced that he has retired from football at the age of 36.
HE HAD A HEART ATTACK ON THE FIELD
Two years ago, while playing for the Dutch league team NEC Nijmegen, Bas Dost suffered a heart attack during a match against AZ Alkmaar. After spending two weeks in the hospital, he was diagnosed with myocarditis following tests and took a break from football for a while.
''YOU DON'T WANT TO GAMBLE WITH YOUR LIFE''
Last April, as the inflammation decreased, Dost was preparing to return to the field when he received bad news from his doctor. Speaking to the Dutch press, Bas Dost announced that he would not be able to return to the field, saying, "I received a call from the cardiologist in June. During a training session, 'something' was diagnosed. That moment changed everything. I thought, 'I don't want this.' You don't want to gamble with your life. I thought about it for two weeks and then made my decision. I retired from football."

Throughout his career, Bas Dost has played for clubs such as Wolfsburg, Sporting Lisbon, Eintracht Frankfurt, Club Brugge, and NEC Nijmegen, scoring 269 goals and providing 59 assists in 540 matches.
