The village head in Nevşehir made an interesting decision to ban iftar meals in homes during Ramadan. Citizens living in the village open their iftar together every evening with meals prepared communally.
STARTED DURING THE PANDEMIC, CONTINUING FOR 5 YEARS
The practice, which started during the pandemic with home meal deliveries to those in need, has gradually become a tradition. For the last 5 years, the villagers have been preparing meals for approximately 700 people every day. While the prepared meals are eaten together at the tables set up, meals are also delivered to the elderly and those on duty who cannot attend.
"IT IS OUR HEAD'S DEFINITE INSTRUCTION..."
The village's Imam Hatip, İbrahim Aktaş, stated that the practice strengthens solidarity, saying, "We have been providing iftar here for five years. Our guests from outside, our law enforcement, and our students all gather at the same table. May Allah reward the benefactors, they do not hold back their help. It is our head's definite instruction that there will be no iftar at home. Come and see, you won't find a single house where food is being cooked," he said.
"MAY ALLAH BE PLEASED WITH EVERYONE"
Another citizen stated that the same unity is experienced every year, saying, "Everyone helps, comes and cleans. May Allah be pleased with everyone. We are happy to eat together here," he expressed. Naciye Ateş, one of the village residents, also expressed their satisfaction with the practice, saying, "Meals have been regularly prepared for five years, no one eats at home. We eat together as a group. We are happy to come here, may Allah be pleased with everyone," she said.
"WE PREPARE IFATAR MEALS FOR 700 PEOPLE DAILY"
The village head, Nihat Ateş, stated that their aim is to strengthen unity and togetherness. Ateş said, "This is the fifth year of the iftar program. Previously, everyone would prepare meals at their own homes and invite their surroundings. We combined this, wanting everyone to eat under the same roof. Police, soldiers, healthcare workers, and airport personnel take their meals to go since they are on duty. We also deliver meals to those who cannot come. When Ramadan comes, we do not allow cooking at home in the village; in short, we ban it. We want to experience this spiritual atmosphere in unity and togetherness. Here, we prepare iftar meals for 700 people daily," he said.
