Highlights from US President Donald Trump's statements at the Gaza Peace Council meeting, which he described as "the most prestigious council in history," are as follows:
"We have worked hard to end wars. We have ended 8 wars. The 9th is on the way. There is nothing cheaper than peace. War is now a hundred times more costly. Nothing is more important than peace."
"THE WAR IN GAZA HAS ENDED"
Trump added, "We are working together to ensure a brighter future for Gaza, the Middle East, and the entire world. The Peace Council is mostly composed of leaders and incredibly respected individuals. Mostly, the leaders of Middle Eastern countries, and countries from all over the world have been very generous financially."
The US President praised the "ceasefire" agreement that came into effect in October, claiming that "the war in Gaza has ended." Referring to disarmament, which continues to be one of the main points of disagreement between Hamas and Israel, Trump expressed his belief that Hamas would "lay down its arms." Trump said, "If they don't, you know, they will face a strong response." He also added that Hamas should be "credited" for finding and returning all the bodies of Israeli captives in Gaza.
"OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH EUROPE IS GREAT"
Trump stated that Norway has agreed to host another Gaza Peace Council meeting. Trump said, "In the meantime, many countries want to become full members of the Gaza Peace Council. A lot of people from Europe also want to join this council. Our relationship with Europe is great. NATO has a great Secretary-General. I want to announce that Norway has agreed to host a meeting to bring together the Peace Council. When I saw Norway's note, I thought they finally made the right decision and are giving me the Nobel Peace Prize."
"THE US WILL CONTRIBUTE 10 BILLION DOLLARS"
Trump said, "Today, more than 7 billion dollars have been contributed to aid efforts in Gaza. FIFA will help raise 75 million dollars for football-related projects in Gaza. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is raising 2 billion dollars in support for Gaza."
Trump also stated: "The countries gathered in the Peace Council symbolize the implementation of real solutions. We do more work with fewer words. In the past, there was always talk in the Middle East. They would talk about peace but do nothing. We have shown what sovereign and responsible countries can do. The US will also contribute 10 billion dollars."
