In an armed attack on a police station in the Balçova district of İzmir, 2 police officers were martyred and 3 people were injured. The attack was carried out by a 16-year-old high school student, E.B., who was captured injured. It was learned that E.B. is a member of ISIS, and the actions carried out in this context are referred to by the organization as "lone wolf" attacks. In this context, the number of arrests in the investigation has risen to 27.
The armed attack that occurred yesterday morning in the Balçova district of İzmir has shocked Turkey. A 16-year-old high school student, E.B., who concealed his face with a ski mask, arrived at the Salih İşgören Police Station around 09:00 and opened fire on the guard booth with a shotgun.
In the attack, police officer Hasan Akın was martyred. Teams that moved in response to the gunfire intervened with the assailant. In the ensuing clash, 1st Class Security Director, Police Chief Inspector Muhsin Aydemir was also martyred. Police officers Ömer Amilağ and Murat Dağlı, along with a civilian, were injured. It was reported that the condition of the injured Ömer Amilağ is serious.
ASSAILANT CAPTURED INJURED
The assailant E.B., who was shot in the leg during the clash, was captured injured at the scene. İzmir Governor Süleyman Elban stated that the attack was carried out by a 3rd-grade high school student and that the young man had no criminal record.
Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç announced that an investigation was immediately launched by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, and 2 chief public prosecutors and 6 prosecutors were assigned to the case.
FAMILY HAS LIVED ON THE SAME STREET AS THE POLICE STATION FOR 15 YEARS
It was learned that E.B. attended Balçova Nevvar Salih İşgören High School, and that the family had been living on the same street as the police station for 15 years, with the father working as a health worker in a hospital.
FIRST STATEMENT FROM THE FATHER
In his first statement, father N.B. indicated that his son had become radicalized recently, spending a lot of time on the computer and phone, and watching violent videos. Mother A.B. also stated that her son had increasingly radicalized and began telling family members, "you are infidels."
During the incident, local residents recounted that they pounced on the assailant when the gun in his hand fell silent and handed him over to the police. It was determined that the shotgun belonged to his father and was licensed, and that the assailant had a large number of bullets and a knife with him.
NUMBER OF ARRESTS RISES TO 27
The investigation launched by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the armed attack on the Balçova Police Station, where 2 police officers were martyred and 3 people, including 2 police officers, were injured, is ongoing.
As part of the work carried out by the Provincial Police Department's Counter-Terrorism Branch, the number of arrests has reached 27.
Among those arrested in the investigation are the assailant E.B., his mother A.B., his father N.B., two friends A.K. and D.Ş., as well as K.N. (32) of Iranian nationality in Istanbul, B.Y. and C.T. in Ankara, and M.A. in Şanlıurfa.
IS IT A "LONE WOLF" ATTACK?
It has been learned that E.B. is a member of ISIS and that the actions carried out in this context are referred to by the organization as "lone wolf" attacks. It has emerged that E.B. prepared a plan for the attack on his own accord in line with the organization's ideology. It was determined that he wrote, "I will carry out a martyrdom operation soon and will become a martyr, God willing," from an account identified as "1Muvahhid99." Khaleg Nooriborojerdi (32), of Iranian nationality, who is believed to be in contact with E.B., was captured in Esenyurt, Istanbul. A local resident who witnessed the attack stated, "When the assailant took off his mask, his face was completely white. He may have taken drugs because it was not normal."
CELEBRATIONS IN İZMİR CANCELLED
Following the attack, the İzmir Governorship canceled the folk dances, mehteran, and band concerts in the events marking the 103rd anniversary of İzmir's Liberation on September 9.
PRESIDENT ERDOĞAN: CONNECTIONS ARE UNDER INVESTIGATION
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated, "We received heartbreaking news that shook us all in İzmir. The perpetrator has been captured, and connections are being investigated. I pray for God's mercy on our martyrs and wish a speedy recovery to our injured police officers."
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, and İYİ Party Chairman Müsavat Dervişoğlu also expressed their condolences to the martyrs and wished healing to the injured in their messages.
