In the Sason district of Batman, the naturally growing herb "zuzubak" found in high mountains and rocky areas is being sold for 10,000 Turkish lira per kilogram.

The "zuzubak" herb, which is consumed as a spice in meals and is known for its medicinal properties, is in high demand in the region. It grows at the foothills of the Cobet plateau, Mereto, and Zoveser mountains. With the arrival of spring, zuzubak herb becomes an important source of income for the villagers. GROWS ON STEEP CLIFFS

Moharrem Algan stated that they collect the zuzubak herb from high cliffs and crush it with rock and salt in a wooden funnel to prepare it for sale, selling it for between 8,500 and 10,000 lira per kilogram. "To collect this, we wake up at 4 in the morning and walk for 5 hours. We can only return in the evening. Sometimes we go by motor, sometimes we go on foot. When we bring it in green, it finds many buyers. It grows on very high cliffs, making it very difficult to collect. We face the risk of falling while collecting. Many people want this herb from us. It is in demand not only in the region but also from Istanbul, Ankara, and other cities. We can only collect about a kilogram a day. It is a rare herb.

USED AS A SPICE

After chopping the collected zuzubak herb into small pieces and cleaning it, we crush it with rock salt in the funnel to turn it into powder. We use this as a spice in meals. We know it is beneficial for many diseases. It is a highly preferred spice herb. We consume it by adding it to ayran, yogurt, cucumber, tomato, and many other dishes. This is our only source of income," he said.
