In the Benetton area of New York City, USA, thousands of Palestine supporters held a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who came to the US for the 80th United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
THOUSANDS PROTESTED AGAINST NETANYAHU
The demonstrators gathered in New York's famous Times Square and marched to 46th Street, across from the UN headquarters. Thousands chanted slogans like "Free Palestine, Free Gaza." Pro-Israel demonstrators held a counter-protest with a small group of 10 people in front of the Palestine supporters. During the protest, where police took extensive security measures, all roads leading to the UN headquarters were closed, and riot police were on standby around the center.
"A CEASEFIRE DECISION IS EXPECTED FROM THE TRUMP-NETANYAHU MEETING"
The protesters also mentioned the upcoming bilateral meeting between US President Donald Trump and Netanyahu, expected to take place next Monday. During the demonstrations, demands were expressed for a ceasefire decision to be reached in the meeting, the end of the war in the Gaza Strip, and the establishment of lasting peace in the region.
Some protesters described it as a "horrific situation" that Netanyahu, who has an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity and war crimes in Gaza, was allowed to come to New York.
"PROTESTS WILL CONTINUE DURING NETANYAHU'S VISIT"
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to stay in New York until Sunday as part of his visit for the UN General Assembly and then travel to the capital, Washington. Additionally, it is anticipated that protests will continue simultaneously with Netanyahu's schedule.
UN MEMBERS HAD LEFT THE HALL
Netanyahu had spoken at the UN General Assembly a few hours ago. Before Netanyahu began his speech, a large part of the hall was seen to be empty, and as he approached the podium, delegations from foreign countries left the hall one by one. Some delegation members chanted "Free Palestine" as they exited the hall, while security forces assigned to the UN remained vigilant throughout Netanyahu's speech to prevent any issues.
