The statement included the following: "Mr. Sırrı Süreyya ÖNDER was brought to our hospital by ambulance with a closed consciousness, respiratory and cardiac arrest at 22:41 on April 15, 2025. He was urgently diagnosed with 'Aortic Dissection' and underwent a Bentall operation (aortic valve replacement and ascending aorta replacement) and single vessel bypass surgery. After the surgery, the patient's hemodynamic stability was ensured under ECMO (Heart support device) and intensive medical treatment in our intensive care unit. The patient's neurological condition worsened, and he entered multiple organ failure as his life-threatening condition increasingly escalated. Mr. Sırrı Süreyya Önder passed away due to multiple organ failure at 16:10 on April 3, on the 18th day of his follow-up and treatment in our intensive care unit. Our condolences to his family and all his loved ones."
HE HAD A HEART ATTACK, AORTA RUPTURED
Önder suffered a heart attack late on April 15. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where his heart stopped twice and was revived by the doctors' intervention. It was determined that the aorta had also ruptured along with the heart attack, and he was urgently taken into surgery.
12-HOUR LONG HEAVY SURGERY AND INTENSIVE CARE PROCESS
Önder underwent a 12-hour long major surgery and had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit since that day. Three days after this surgery, the doctors opened Önder's chest once again. The doctors noted the improvement they observed, stating, "We saw that the right heart started to contract. The right heart, which hardly contracted at all during the first surgery, has begun to show significant contraction, though not completely." In a statement made on the 13th day of intensive care treatment, it was reported that Önder's neurological condition was deteriorating and his reflexes were decreasing.
WHO IS SIRRI SÜREYYA ÖNDER?
Sırrı Süreyya Önder was born on July 7, 1962, in Adıyaman, and is a Turkish director, screenwriter, producer, actor, journalist, and politician. He is a Member of Parliament for Istanbul from the DEM Party and the Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
He worked as a director, screenwriter, actor, music producer, and columnist in the national press. He was elected as a Member of Parliament from Istanbul's 2nd district in the 2011 general elections, participating in the ranks of the Labor, Democracy, and Freedom Block (independents supported by the BDP). He was the HDP's candidate for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in the 2014 local elections but did not win. He was elected as a Member of Parliament from Ankara's 1st district in the June 2015 and November 2015 general elections, participating in the ranks of the HDP. He served as a Member of Parliament for Istanbul in the 24th, 25th, and 26th terms and was elected as a Member of Parliament for Istanbul in the 28th term from the DEM Party in the 2023 general elections. He passed away on May 3, 2025.
