Sırrı Süreyya Önder passed away at the age of 62 in the hospital where he was receiving treatment. In his last interview before his death, it was revealed that Önder stated, "I have gone through a difficult illness process. I am partially still going through it. This means seeing the end of the road."
The Deputy Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and DEM Party Istanbul Deputy Sırrı Süreyya Önder lost his 18-day battle for life in the hospital where he was being treated for heart problems. A statement from the hospital reported that Önder passed away due to multiple organ failure. The words he expressed in his last interview before his death drew attention.
"THIS MEANS THE VIEW OF THIS DISTANCE"
Before his death, Önder spoke in a program broadcasted on Habertürk, saying, "I went through a serious illness process. I am partially still going through it. I have wandered around the hospital wards quite a bit. I have a complex troubled condition. I am struggling with these. This means the view of this distance little by little. We are all mortal. If there is a person who does not die, let it be us as the second one."
WHAT HAPPENED?
Sırrı Süreyya Önder suffered a serious heart condition at his home in Istanbul on the evening of April 15, 2025. His heart stopped while being transported to the hospital by ambulance, and it was restarted with interventions. Tests conducted at the hospital revealed a tear in the aorta, the main artery coming from the heart (aortic dissection). Önder underwent a challenging surgery lasting approximately 12 hours at Şişli Florence Nightingale Hospital. After the surgery, his treatment continued in the intensive care unit, where he was sedated and received supportive therapies. Sırrı Süreyya Önder passed away on May 3, 2025, at 16:10 due to multiple organ failure after an 18-day intensive care process.
