With the decision of the President published in the Official Gazette, additional taxes on the import of certain products originating from the USA have been removed. The 60% additional customs duty applied to American-made cars has now come to an end, raising the question, "Will car prices decrease?" Since the additional tax has been lifted on Tesla models, prices may drop by around 30-40%.
According to the decision published in the Official Gazette with the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan; the decision regarding the application of additional financial obligations on the import of certain products of U.S. origin, which was put into effect by the Council of Ministers' decision in 2018, has been revoked. It was stated that the decision was made in accordance with the provisions of Article 1 of Law No. 1567, Article 2 of Law No. 474, Article 2 of Law No. 3283, Articles 16, 22, and 55 of Law No. 4458, and the provisions of Law No. 2976 and Law No. 4067.
60% ADDITIONAL TAX ON CARS REMOVED
The first of the new regulations was made regarding the additional financial obligations that include cars imported from the U.S., which came into effect in 2018. The removal of the additional 60% tax applied to vehicles produced in the U.S. has opened the door to significant changes in the automotive sector.
Some products subject to additional tax:
- Passenger cars: 60%
- Ethanol & alcoholic beverages: 70%
- Cosmetic products: 30%
- Plastic goods: 30%
- Leaf tobacco: 30%
- Rice: 25%
- Hard-shell fruits: 10%
- Types of paper: 10–25%
PRICES OF U.S.-MADE VEHICLES MAY DROP
Due to these taxes, the prices of some models from companies such as Ford, Chevrolet, Tesla, Jeep, Cadillac, GMC, Dodge, RAM, Hummer, and Chrysler, which are produced in the U.S., will decrease.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO TESLA PRICES?
Since the additional 60% tax on Tesla models has been removed, prices may drop by around 30-40%. For example, the Tesla Model Y Standard Range is currently 2,305,500 TL, and the new price may drop to approximately 1.5-1.7 million TL. The exact figures depend on Tesla's update.
