While many countries around the world are making great efforts to attract tourists, the Venice region of Italy is taking measures against excessive tourism. In this context, the city administration, aiming to reduce congestion, has brought back the proposal to charge visitors who wish to come to the city a fee of 5 euros.
The Venice administration is once again implementing its much-discussed measure to protect the city's historical and cultural heritage. The city of Venice, famous for its canals, had started a 'entrance fee' application of 5 euros for day-trippers on April 25, 2024.
Following the trial application that ended in July 2024, the 'entrance fee' (April 18, 2025) will resume tomorrow. The most significant innovation of this year's application is that those who wish to make a day trip at the last minute will be charged double the fee.
THE CITY GENERATED RECORD REVENUE FROM TOURISTS
Venice, which initiated this application to combat overtourism, became the first major tourist city in the world to charge an entrance fee. Although this application did not significantly affect the number of visitors to the city, it generated the expected additional revenue. Last year, approximately 440,000 people paid the entrance fee to the city center in 29 days, generating a total revenue of around 2.4 million euros. This year, the fee, which can also be paid online, will remain at 5 euros, but tickets purchased three days before the trip will double in price.
FREE FOR CHILDREN
Those who will stay overnight in Venice and children under 14 years old do not have to pay the 5 euro entrance fee. Certain categories, such as local residents or those working and studying in the city, are exempt from the fee. Last year, a record number of visitors came to Venice and its region, with more than 3.9 million people staying overnight in the city's historical center. On the other hand, approximately 30 million people visit Venice each year.
