THE AIRCRAFT TURKEY WILL PURCHASE SEEN FOR THE FIRST TIME
Responding to President Erdoğan's invitation, Starmer made an official visit to Ankara, where he proceeded to the area containing 3 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets belonging to the Royal Air Force, accompanied by Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler at the Mürted Air Base Command where he was welcomed.
After inspecting the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, Starmer briefly chatted with the pilots and technical team, accompanied by UK Defense Minister John Healey and Chief of the Royal Air Force, General Harv Smyth.
During the visit, the aircraft that Turkey will purchase were also seen for the first time.
ERDOĞAN: WE ARE DETERMINED TO INCREASE OUR TRADE VOLUME TO 40 BILLION DOLLARS
Speaking at the signing ceremony, President Erdoğan stated: "I am very pleased to host Mr. Starmer in our country. We have a close dialogue with him on many issues that occupy the international agenda. The focus of our discussions today was on trade and our defense relations. The United Kingdom is among our largest trade and investment partners. We are determined to increase our trade volume to 30 billion dollars initially and then to 40 billion dollars."
We are determined to further strengthen our economic relations. Our relevant institutions and organizations are taking many measures, including updating free trade. We are focusing on joint investments in third countries. We aim to establish new partnerships in the energy and defense industries. We are very pleased that many UK citizens see Turkey as their second home. We have started negotiations for a bilateral cooperation framework agreement between us.
"THE EUROFIGHTER AGREEMENT IS A NEW SYMBOL OF STRATEGIC RELATIONS"
Implementation arrangements for the procurement of Eurofighter fighter jets were signed during inter-delegation meetings. We signed a declaration of cooperation on this matter with Mr. Starmer. We see this agreement as a new symbol of our strategic relations. I would like to thank Mr. Starmer and his team for the work carried out by the UK within the Eurofighter Consortium throughout the process.
"THIS WILL OPEN DOORS TO JOINT PROJECTS IN THE DEFENSE INDUSTRY"
I believe that this cooperation with the United Kingdom will open doors to joint projects in the defense industry. Today, we also had the opportunity to reassess the developments in Gaza once again. I thank the Prime Minister for their decision to recognize the state of Palestine on behalf of myself and my nation. We view this decision as a courageous step. Considering the winter conditions, it is of great importance to deliver the humanitarian aid that the people of Gaza need. I believe we will take steps together with the United Kingdom on this matter.
Especially, the current government in Israel needs to be restrained. We also evaluated the recent developments in Ukraine with the Prime Minister, reaffirming our joint stance on resolving this war, which is completing its 4th year, as soon as possible with a just peace. Naturally, while efforts are ongoing, it is necessary to prevent internal and external actors from attempting to destabilize the country. I greet you all with my warmest feelings.
STARMER: WE ARE WORKING MUCH CLOSER THAN BEFORE
UK Prime Minister Starmer stated in a press conference: "I am very pleased to be here with you. Both countries may be at the two ends of Europe. We are now two countries working much closer than before. We are working as NATO allies. We support Ukraine and work for peace in the Middle East. I want to emphasize the role you play. We are working to bring the region to a much better point in Gaza.
There is much we can do regarding security, combating terrorism, migration, energy, and many other issues. We have taken a very big step here. We feel a strategic partnership. We are announcing the first UK-Turkey Bilateral Cooperation framework. This is a very important milestone. At the heart of all this is the agreement we signed today. The United Kingdom will provide Turkey with 20 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. This will deepen our cooperation in NATO and in our defense industry. It will create 20,000 job opportunities.
We will work together in the construction of these aircraft.
