During the 5.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in California, the herd of elephants at the San Diego Zoo displayed their instinct to protect their young on camera. At the moment of the earthquake, the herd quickly came together to form an "alarm circle" to safeguard their calves. Even after the earthquake, the herd remained together until they were sure their young ones were safe.

These heartwarming moments were captured on camera as a herd of elephants formed a circle around their calves to protect them during the earthquake that shook the San Diego Zoo in California.

When a 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck near San Diego on Monday morning, the herd of elephants quickly gathered together. The footage shows five elephants forming an "alarm circle" around their smallest calves.

Although the camera began to shake as the earthquake started, the herd huddled closely together to keep their calves safe.

Officials at the San Diego Zoo stated that even after the earthquake, the herd continued to stay close to each other until they were completely sure of their calves' safety.

According to reports, the herd of elephants in San Diego sprang into action and took this protective position the moment they felt the initial tremors of the earthquake. It is known that elephants have a special ability to detect sounds through their feet.

The zoo expressed on the social media platform X that the animals' behavior was a "natural response to perceived threats in order to protect the herd."

The earthquake occurred at 10:08 local time, approximately 4 kilometers near the town of Julian, about 96 kilometers away from San Diego.

An emergency alert sent to local residents stated, "Earthquake Detected! Drop, Cover, Hold On. Protect Yourself."

At least seven aftershocks were recorded following the earthquake. These tremors were also felt in various areas of Southern California, including Orange County, Carlsbad, and Temecula.

So far, no casualties or property damage have been reported.

This earthquake occurred just a few hours after another earthquake measuring 3.5 that took place near Julian on Sunday afternoon. That earthquake also caused no damage.

Additionally, a strong earthquake measuring 6.5 struck the Fiji Islands on Monday morning.

These tremors were felt in various regions of Fiji, including the Lautoka Islands.

The magnitude of this earthquake was greater than the largest earthquake recorded in Fiji in November, which was 5.9 in magnitude for the year 2024.
