In the Amasra district of Bartın, a husband who shot his wife, who was in the process of divorce, in the legs with a shotgun appeared before a judge for the first time. The defendant, who is being tried with a request for a prison sentence of 13 to 20 years, made chilling statements in court. The defendant said, "When the person who was supposed to be my wife said, 'Are you a father, you dishonorable man?' I was provoked. When she picked up the phone, I got scared and panicked. I fired at the ground to scare her."

Ahsen Nur Paşalı (27), a mother of two, was injured in the legs during a gun attack in front of her sister's souvenir shop in the Kum Mahallesi Küçük Liman area of Amasra, Bartın, on August 27, 2023, while trying to escape from her husband, whom she had been married to for 7 years and had suffered violence from. Okan Paşalı, who caused terror with a shotgun, and his friend U. G. were caught and detained while fleeing in Cide, Kastamonu.

HUSBAND WHO SHOT HIS WIFE IN COURT

In the indictment prepared by the Public Prosecutor's Office against Okan Paşalı and his friend U. G., who were arrested by the duty court, a prison sentence of 13 to 20 years was requested for the crime of "attempting to intentionally kill a close relative." Okan Paşalı and U. G. appeared before the judge at the Bartın 1st Heavy Penal Court. The first hearing was attended by the detained defendants Okan Paşalı and U. G., the victim Ahsen Nur Paşalı, the lawyers of the parties, and witnesses. While the Bartın Bar Association and the lawyers of the Ministry of Family and Social Policies requested to intervene in the case, the court decided that the lawyers could observe the case but could not participate.

"I DIDN'T KNOW HE HAD A GUN IN HIS CAR"

During the hearing, detained defendant U. G. claimed that he came to Amasra to hang out with Okan Paşalı, that he did not know Okan Paşalı's wife, and that the incident was not premeditated. U. G. stated that he was also a tradesman in Ankara and that he met Okan Paşalı a year ago, recounting the horror that unfolded in a calm manner. U. G. said that when the gun went off, he froze in the car, stating, "I didn't know he had a wife. I came to the car, the incident happened. He fired, I saw his wife for the first time there. After the incident, Okan panicked and said, 'Brother, drive,' so I drove. When the gun went off, I was just sitting in the car. I didn't know he had a gun in his car. If I had known, I wouldn't have come; I never would have guessed Okan would do such a thing. Because we are tradesmen, we see each other every day, we do business. Everyone loves Okan; he is a good master," he said.

"I'VE BEEN IN JAIL FOR 8 MONTHS, 5 EXECUTIONS CAME"

U. G., who claimed he did not help Okan Paşalı and had no connection to the incident, continued:

"I didn't know I would be harmed. I left my children behind; I've been in prison here for 8 months. Five executions came while I was in prison. My child's school fees and everything have put us in a very difficult situation. My wife started working. She sends me money. We are in a tough situation; we can't work. If I had known this would happen, I wouldn't have come; I came because I loved Okan. I have no connection to the incident. Everyone knows each other in the industry. I didn't help. If I had known something like this would happen, I would have even tried to prevent it. The incident developed suddenly, so I couldn't do anything. I didn't even know he had a wife. I want my acquittal."

Defendant Okan Paşalı stated in his testimony that there was a fake license plate in his vehicle on the day of the incident, that the vehicle was under seizure, and that it had no insurance, saying, "After 2023, a feud started with my father-in-law. I was attacked while driving, and I was shot with a gun. A plate was placed in my right leg. Then I changed the plate. I got a new plate that was deferred. The incidents did not stop. The individuals identified my identity information and pursued me. For no reason, a person with whom I had no feud shot me. For this reason, I thought the police could learn my vehicle's license plate. At the same time, my vehicle was under seizure. Because it had no insurance, I put a fake plate on the vehicle. I started using it with this plate," he said.

"I NEVER THREATENED WITH A GUN"

Recalling that he was accused of attempted murder with premeditation, Okan Paşalı claimed that it was not a premeditated situation and that he was provoked by the words of his wife, Ahsen Nur Paşalı, who was in the process of divorce. He also noted that he had been carrying a gun since their marriage in 2017, stating, "I have been married to this person since 2017. I have had a gun since 2017. I have never threatened this person with a gun in any way. Until now, he has not filed a complaint saying that I pointed a gun at him. It is not possible for this to be planned at this time. A month before the incident, the person was calling my child from a hidden number, saying, 'Daddy, save me, daddy, save us.' He was using a hidden number, constantly provoking me by calling. A person who is seeking refuge does not take their children to the house of a drug addict and deliver them there," he said.

Claiming that he came to Amasra for vacation, Paşalı said, "I came to Amasra from Ankara for vacation, also thinking that my children might be there to clear my head. I came with U. brother to clear my head. I arrived at the scene in the morning and saw the person. I did not intervene in any way. I sent U. brother to the beach. I waited for my children until 3:00 PM. A gray vehicle came, and my children were inside. The vehicle entering and exiting the parking lot with my children was simultaneous. It headed towards Bartın. Since my vehicle had a malfunction, I couldn't exceed 80-90 kilometers per hour. When I realized I wouldn't catch up with it, I returned to the parking lot and waited a bit," he said.

"I WAS PROVOKED WHEN HE SAID 'ARE YOU DAD, YOU DISGRACE?'"

Calmly recounting the events of the day, Okan Paşalı stated that when he saw his wife, he asked where his children were, saying, "At that moment, there was a shotgun about 50-60 centimeters long on the seat. I had previously caught a shotgun in my vehicle in Ankara. This is the first time there is no shotgun in my vehicle. This is not specific to this person; I had a shotgun in my vehicle before. There is always a shotgun in my vehicle. I put it in my car to use when the right to self-defense arises. When I asked to have the vehicle towed, I asked nicely, 'Where are my children?' I said, 'Leave the phone, let's talk.' At that moment, he said, 'Are you dad, you disgrace? You'll see now.' He took the phone and pretended to call someone. He provoked me by threatening me. I got scared and panicked. I fired to scare him. The person was in front of the bank," he stated.

"I FIRED AT THE GROUND"

Defendant Okan Paşalı claimed that he fired at the ground with the shotgun, saying, "As can be understood from the shell casings, I fired to the right. If I had aimed directly at the center or above the waist, it would have been obvious. The second time, the person went towards the toilet. I threw it towards the direction of the souvenirs, which are referred to as pots and pans. The person was already on the right side. If I had gone to kill him, I would have fired as soon as I got out of the car. Or I would have fired from inside the car without waking him up, or I could have gone after him and carried out this act in the toilet. There is no problem that would require me to kill the person.

"I didn't calculate the distance because I shot in another direction. I specifically shot downwards, and the pellets hit his foot after bouncing off the ground. There was no pellet that hit directly. I had no intention to kill. There was no reason to kill the person," he said.

"IT STARTED WITH A SLAP, HE BROKE MY NOSE"

The victim, Ahsen Nur Paşalı, stated that her husband Okan Paşalı, whom she married 8 years ago, had gradually increased the violence against her since the year they got married. Ahsen Nur Paşalı explained that Okan Paşalı started the violence by slapping her in front of his family and described the events leading up to the moment she was shot:

"He started the violence in front of his family. The last time I was assaulted was on May 19, 2024. I went to the park with my children without his permission, and while I was sitting on the swing that day, my nose was broken. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance. I didn't come home after the hospital. On the day of the incident, he called his brother and said, 'I broke Ahsen's mouth and nose. Go check on her.' His brother didn't want to come, saying, 'Let them do whatever they want.' They came at his insistence and saw me in the ambulance. That day, he took my phone from me. Since my parents were working, I stayed at my grandmother's house. While I was there, he came almost every day, trying to kick down the door and shooting 4-5 shots into the air with a gun, constantly shouting, cursing, and threatening my family. He thinks that I want to return, but my family doesn't let me. I talked to my family to change his mind. I went to a women's shelter in Ankara to make him understand that I wanted to leave. I stayed there for about 1.5-2 months. Since I couldn't go outside, they sent me to Zonguldak. The Zonguldak shelter was not a place where children could live. That's why I came to Amasra to stay with my sister. I didn't think he would come here since he knew I was in a women's shelter. This incident happened 1.5 months later."

"HE SAID, 'I'LL SHOOT YOU AND EAT A MEATBALL SANDWICH ON YOU'"

Ahsen Nur Paşalı stated that her husband, who was in the process of divorce, had been sending her threatening messages until 3-4 days before the incident, saying, "He was constantly sending messages before the incident. He said he missed the children and wanted them. He was threatening me, saying he would kill me. Once he said, 'I will shoot you and then go eat a meatball sandwich on you.' He stopped sending messages until 3-4 days before the incident. I called him from a private number. He was constantly bothering my family. He broke the windows and mirrors of the truck at my father's workplace. I got angry, shouted, and hung up. But I didn't say anything about where I was. There was no way for him to hear my children's voices," she said.

"I COULD ONLY PRESS KADES"

Ahsen Nur Paşalı, who described the horror she experienced on the day of the incident, said, "On the day of the incident, I was sitting inside the shop. A vehicle approached the front of the shop. I always feel anxious when I see that brand of vehicle. I looked, and the license plate was different. I felt a bit relieved. But still, I leaned down to look at the vehicle, and there was an unfamiliar person inside. Then I approached the vehicle and told them that parking was prohibited. They said they would leave soon. I said they might get angry. They said someone would come, and they would leave. They were in the back seat, so I couldn't see them. Since I didn't know them, I didn't want to engage too much. I went to the café across the street. My children and my sister's children came; they went to the beach. I went back to the shop from the café. I got tea and sat at the table. I took my phone to call the children. I heard a voice asking where my children were. I raised my head, and they asked again. I didn't say a single word out of fear of him. I didn't say anything to him. I had already imagined it in my head. I kept telling myself, 'If you see him in front of you, don't panic, press KADES.' Pressing KADES is just two buttons. When I saw him, I immediately pressed KADES," she said.

"HE AIMED DIRECTLY AT ME"

Ahsen Nur Paşalı claimed that Okan Paşalı aimed directly at her with his gun, saying, "He told me twice to 'put down the phone.' Then he opened fire. He didn't aim at my feet. He aimed directly at me. When I saw the gun in his hand, I tried to run away immediately; I jumped. I didn't stay still. There is a concrete bump at the entrance of the restroom. It goes from low to high. I ran towards the restroom. When the first shotgun sound was heard, the place was crowded. There was no chance of going into the restroom. If he had gone in, he would have known that himself," she said.

AFTER STOMACH SURGERY, HE SAT ON HER STOMACH

Ahsen Nur Paşalı stated that she had stomach surgery on October 2, 2023, and that Okan Paşalı even applied violence to her during that process. Paşalı said, "I have been subjected to violence since the day we got married. I had stomach surgery on October 2, 2023. It had been 10-11 days since the surgery. He sat on my stomach. I suffered for 3 days. I have been experiencing violence that started with a single slap 7 years ago and has gradually increased every day. I was constantly threatened, fearing that my family would be harmed. I have now believed in myself; that fear is gone. I am pressing charges," she said.

In the trial where witnesses from both sides were heard, after the lawyers' defenses, the court decided to release the defendant U. G. under judicial control, while continuing the detention of Okan Paşalı.
