In Mexico, Mayor Carlos Manzo, who called on President Claudia Sheinbaum to combat drug traffickers, was killed in an armed attack during a public candlelight vigil.
Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan in the state of Michoacan, western Mexico, was killed on Saturday during a public candlelight vigil he attended.
DIED DESPITE ALL INTERVENTIONS
Michoacan's Attorney General Carlos Torres Piña announced that the 40-year-old politician, who was shot in the city center around 8 PM, died in the hospital where he was taken. Authorities have not yet determined the motive for the attack.
ONE OF THE ATTACKERS WAS KILLED
Michoacan Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla reported that one of the attackers was killed, and two others were detained.
HAD CALLED FOR A WAR AGAINST CARTELS
Manzo had repeatedly called for more resources from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to combat drug traffickers. In previous months, Mexico's leader Sheinbaum criticized Manzo for calling on the police to kill criminals who attack civilians.
HE HAD BEEN SAYING HIS LIFE WAS IN DANGER
Manzo, who previously served in Sheinbaum's party, was running as an independent candidate in 2024. In recent months, he had been making videos emphasizing that his life was in danger. Last year, a journalist was shot and killed immediately after interviewing Manzo.
