Decisions introducing new tax regulations on automobile imports have raised numerous questions. Following these decisions, it has become clear which car models will see the most significant price increases and decreases. The models that will experience price hikes include the Toyota Corolla Cross, Toyota RAV4, Honda Civic, Honda Jazz, Honda HR-V, Honda CR-V, and Volkswagen Polo, while the brands that will see price reductions are Chery, MG, and SWM.
The decision introducing new tax regulations for automobile imports has been published in the Official Gazette. In this context, an additional customs tax will be applied to passenger cars imported from countries outside the European Union and Free Trade Agreement (FTA) countries. While the additional tax on internal combustion engine cars imported from China has been reduced, the additional taxes on cars imported from the USA have been removed.
HERE ARE THE DETAILS OF THE DECISIONS TAKEN
With the new regulation, it is observed that a 30% additional tax has been imposed on electric and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles from all countries outside the EU and FTA countries, while a 25% additional tax has been applied to gasoline, diesel, and full hybrids. Taxes on hybrid and electric vehicles imported from China and Japan have increased, while tax reductions have been made for hybrid and electric vehicles imported from the USA. Conversely, the tax rate for internal combustion engine vehicles coming from China has been reduced.
IT WILL COME INTO EFFECT IN 2 MONTHS
It has been stated that there is a two-month transition period for vehicles that have already started to be imported, while those who invest or will invest seem to be exempt from this change.
WHAT ABOUT VEHICLES IMPORTED FROM CHINA?
The prices of vehicles imported from China will also decrease. Previously, a total customs tax of 50% was applied to hybrid vehicles imported from China, 60% for vehicles with internal combustion engines, and 50% for electric models. According to the new regulation, in the application that will come into effect in two months, the total tax rate for hybrids and internal combustion engine vehicles will be reduced to 35%, and for electric vehicles, it will be reduced to 40%. This may lead to a decrease in the sales price of the vehicles.
WHICH BRANDS WILL BE AFFECTED?
The brands that will be most affected here are those that manufacture in Japan. Honda, Subaru, and Lexus seem to be the most affected brands. Brands like Toyota and Nissan, which carry out a large part of their production in Europe, are likely to be less affected except for the models they produce in Japan.
Some of the models that are likely to see price increases are as follows:
- Toyota Corolla Cross, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado
- Honda Civic (Thailand), Honda Jazz, Honda HR-V, Honda CR-V
- Nissan X-Trail
- Volkswagen Polo (South Africa)
- Audi Q5 (Mexico)
- Lexus LBX, Lexus NX, Lexus RX, Lexus LM
- Subaru Forester, Subaru Crosstrek
- Suzuki Jimny
WHICH MODELS ARE EXPECTED TO SEE PRICE REDUCTIONS?
The customs tax rate for conventional (internal combustion) cars produced in China and hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric cars produced in the USA has also decreased. New models from the USA are expected to arrive in this context. Discounts may be possible for models belonging to Chery, MG, and SWM, which are produced in China and sold in Turkey.
DISCOUNTS ARE EXPECTED ON THESE MODELS
- Chery Omoda 5
- Chery Tiggo 7
- Chery Tiggo 8
- MG7
- MG HS
- SWM G01
- SWM G01F
- SWM G03F
- SWM G05 PRO
NEW MODELS MAY COME FROM THE USA
The sales prices of models produced by Tesla and Ford in the USA may decrease in Turkey. Additionally, it is expected that brands producing in the USA will enter the Turkish market with new models.
While Tesla offers its Model Y, produced in Germany, for sale in Turkey without paying customs tax, other models were not offered for sale in Turkey due to high taxes. Due to relatively lower customs taxes applied to the USA, it may be possible for the brand to offer different models, especially the Cybertruck, for sale in Turkey.
