4 PEOPLE KILLED IN THE EXPLOSION IN IRAN
Babek Mahmudi, the head of the Iranian Red Crescent Relief and Rescue Organization, spoke to Iranian state television regarding the explosion. Mahmudi stated that 4 people lost their lives in the explosion at the Shahid Recai Shah Port in Bender Abbas, located in Hormozgan province.
Mahmudi, who announced that he had reached the region, reported that efforts to extinguish the fire that broke out after the explosion were ongoing. In the incident, which occurred due to the explosion of some containers at the port, initial assessments indicate that 516 people were injured.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined. Reports in the country’s media indicated that a building at the port was damaged due to the intensity of the explosion, and the windows of nearby buildings were also broken.
THE EXPLOSION OCCURRED IN AN AREA WHERE CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES WERE STORED
A source, who wished to remain anonymous, told the semi-official Fars News Agency that the incident occurred in an area where chemical substances were stored at the port.
Hormozgan Governor Mohammad Ashouri also stated that the cause of the explosion is still unknown, but there is a possibility that it is related to various flammable materials.
Ashouri stated, "The security of the ports is regularly monitored, but Shahid Recai Port is a place where various goods are located. Serious warnings have been made, and we will announce the results in subsequent investigations."
POSSIBILITY OF SABOTAGE
Mehrdad Hasanzade, the General Director of Crisis Management in Hormozgan, also expressed that they had previously warned the authorities about security at the port.
Iran's Crisis Management Spokesperson Hussein Zafari also reported that the port is a container yard and that a large number of containers containing chemical substances are stored there.
The Iranian official stated, "It has been determined that the explosion originated from the chemicals inside the containers. Previously, the General Director of Crisis Management had also issued warnings regarding this port during his visits and highlighted the potential danger."
Zafari noted that the possibility of the explosion being caused by sabotage is weak.
Iran's Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Spokesperson Ibrahim Rizaei stated that the claims suggesting the incident was a terrorist act or sabotage are merely media speculation and currently rejected the possibility of sabotage.
ACTIVITIES AT THE PORT HAVE STOPPED
It has been announced that activities at the strategic port, where a significant portion of the country's exports are carried out, have completely ceased.
In a statement made by the Iranian Customs Authority, it was reported that export shipments from Shahid Recai Port have been suspended until further notice.
Following the explosion, Interior Minister Iskender Mumini went to the city of Bender Abbas to assess the extent of the incident on-site, upon the instruction of President Masoud Pezeshkian.
President Pezeshkian also issued a special investigation order to examine the extent of the explosion.
ISRAEL'S STATEMENT
According to Israeli media, Israeli officials claimed that they had no involvement in the explosion at the Port of Bender Abbas, located on the southern coast of Iran.
According to a report by Israel's Maariv newspaper, Israeli army officials denied any connection to the explosion.
The report noted that the explosion at the Port of Bender Abbas occurred while the third round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran regarding Iran's nuclear program was taking place in Muscat, the capital of Oman.
It was reported that sources from the Israeli army claimed that there was no connection between the explosion in Iran and the Israeli army.
