As the earthquake storm in the Aegean Sea continues for weeks, Greece maintains its anxious wait while increasing precautions. The latest recorded images from the Aegean, where several earthquakes occur almost every hour, are alarming.
SQUARE WAVES FORMED IN THE AEGEAN SEA
In the footage recorded by Turkish fishermen, square-shaped waves were observed in the sea. The video in question brings to mind the possibility of a "tsunami," which experts frequently mention.
EVACUATION CONTINUES FROM GREEK ISLANDS
Due to the earthquake storm in the Aegean Sea, a state of emergency has been declared in neighboring Greece. The number of those evacuated from Santorini and surrounding islands has reached 20,000. Education has also been suspended in schools on the islands.
"AN EARTHQUAKE OF 6.3 MAGNITUDE MAY OCCUR"
On the other hand, retired Professor of Earthquake Sciences Panayotis Papadimitriu from the University of Athens, speaking to the Greek press, noted that volcanic activity is associated with land deformation in the region, and focused on two possible scenarios regarding the seismic activity on Yamurgi Island near Santorini.
According to the first scenario, the seismic activity may weaken and eventually stop over time, but in the second scenario, an earthquake of magnitude 6 to 6.3 may occur. Panayotis Papadimitriu also stated that such an earthquake would not have a significant impact on the surrounding islands because the epicenter is far away. He added, "We should keep in mind that the New Kameni volcano became active from the end of January and will keep us busy in the future."
