In an operation against international historical artifact smuggling at the Edirne Kapıkule Border Gate, two suspects attempting to leave the country by car were apprehended. A large number of silver coins from the Hellenistic period, featuring portraits of Alexander the Great, were seized from the suspects.
The Edirne Provincial Police Department's Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime (KOM) Branch teams stopped two suspects named S.K. and M.Y.Y. during inspections at the Kapıkule Border Gate in Edirne.
CAUGHT WITH COINS DEPICTING ALEXANDER THE GREAT
During the search, a large number of historical coins from the Hellenistic period were found, featuring a portrait of Alexander the Great in the style of Heracles on the front and a figure of the Greek god Zeus on the back.
THEY WERE ARRESTED
It was determined that the seized coins were intended to be smuggled out of the country illegally. The detained S.K. and M.Y.Y. were arrested by the court after their procedures at the police station and sent to prison.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
