New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated in a press release that 13 people have died from hypothermia during the freezing temperatures. Mamdani also reported that 3 more individuals have lost their lives, but the exact causes of death have not yet been clarified. Noting that the temperature in the city has been below zero for more than 10 days, Mamdani said, "We may be in the midst of the longest period of consecutive sub-zero temperatures in our city." Mamdani warned that the homeless should move to shelters.
"BLUE CODE" HAS BEEN DECLARED
A "Blue Code" has been declared in New York since January 19 due to the freezing temperatures. The Blue Code is known as an emergency procedure activated to protect vulnerable individuals from life-threatening cold when temperatures drop to 0 degrees.
