An important development has occurred regarding the tariffs that have created tension between the U.S. and China. Speaking about the tax sanctions, Trump stated, "We have spoken with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Negotiations for an agreement are ongoing." However, China denied that it is conducting talks with the U.S.
Trump, who noted that he had a phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, reported that negotiations for a trade agreement between China and the United States are ongoing.
Trump stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping called him and that his administration is actively engaged in negotiations to reach an agreement with China. Trump said of Xi, "I don't think this (the meeting with the U.S.) is a sign of weakness on his part."
CHINA DENIED
The Beijing administration once again denied U.S. President Donald Trump's claim that tariff negotiations with China are ongoing, asserting that Washington is misleading the public.
WHAT HAPPENED?
China reacted to U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of "reciprocal tariffs" on April 2, and responded in kind. In the end, the tariff standoff between the two countries led the U.S. to raise its customs tariff on China to 145%, while Beijing increased its tariff to 125%.
The Washington administration postponed reciprocal tariffs imposed on other countries by 90 days, while those directed at China went into effect.
