ATTACKS FREQUENT IN THE COUNTRY
Nigeria has long faced attacks from armed gangs as well as terrorist groups Boko Haram and ISWAP, the West African affiliate of ISIS, in various parts of the country.
Although the penalty for kidnapping in the country is death, kidnappings for ransom are common. Armed individuals often target villages, schools, and travelers in the north of the country, demanding ransom.
