A 35-year-old woman in India was found to be carrying a 12-week-old fetus in her liver. This case, which has been observed in only 45 women worldwide, astonished even the doctors. The high-risk pregnancy was terminated with a 90-minute operation.

35-year-old Sarvesh, living in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, went to the doctor with complaints of nausea, fatigue, and abdominal pain that she had been experiencing for months. In the initial examinations, no findings were detected, and her condition was thought to be a common stomach infection, leading to the start of antibiotic treatment. However, when her complaints did not decrease, detailed tests revealed that Sarvesh had a 12-week pregnancy in her liver.

"I WAS VOMITING CONSTANTLY, I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS HAPPENING"

Speaking to the BBC, Sarvesh described her experience, saying, "I was vomiting constantly, feeling tired and in pain. I was struggling to understand what was happening." The images revealed in the second scan shocked even the doctors. Dr. KK Gupta, a radiologist with 20 years of experience, stated, "There was a 12-week-old baby on the right side of her liver. I have never seen anything like this before."

IT CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL COMMUNITY

Normally, a fertilized egg is expected to implant in the uterus, but in this rare case, the embryo had attached to the liver. Due to the rich blood flow in the liver, the fetus developed in the early weeks, but later it became impossible for both the mother and the fetus to survive. It was noted that only 45 cases of liver pregnancies have been recorded worldwide, three of which involved Indian women.

SHE WAS SAVED BY SURGERY

Since Sarvesh continued to have her monthly menstrual cycle normally, she could not accept the doctors' diagnosis at first. However, after examinations, it was stated that there was no option other than to remove the fetus. Otherwise, the liver would rupture, and the woman would inevitably lose her life. Although it was suggested that she undergo surgery in Delhi, it was not possible due to financial constraints. Eventually, the fetus was removed in a challenging 90-minute operation at a private hospital in Meerut.

After the surgery, Sarvesh received 21 stitches in her abdomen. Still resting in bed, she is dependent on her husband for basic needs. Her husband, Paramveer, shared their struggles, saying, "We are poor; it was not possible for us to go to Delhi. We went through a very difficult process for three months."

VERY RARELY SEEN IN THE WORLD

Prof. Dr. Mamta Singh from the Varanasi Institute of Medical Sciences stated that ectopic pregnancies are usually seen in the fallopian tubes, and it is extremely rare for them to implant in other organs. Prof. Dr. Monika Anant from Patna AIIMS University emphasized that liver pregnancies occur in approximately one in seven to eight million pregnancies worldwide.
