In the investigation into the tornado incident in Antalya's Kepez district on October 25, in which 4 workers died and 1 person was injured, the contractor and the site chief were arrested. With the decision given in line with the expert report, the occupational safety specialist and one contractor were released under judicial control conditions.
4 WORKERS DIED IN THE CONTAINER
The incident occurred at around 23:00 on October 25 at the construction site on 6199th Street in Fevzi Çakmak Neighborhood of Kepez district. While heavy rain and wind were effective in the city center, the tornado that broke out at the site flung and shattered the 2 containers where the workers were staying. The tower crane at the site also collapsed. Upon the report, numerous medical, fire, police and rescue teams were dispatched to the area.
In the incident, in which 6 workers staying in the containers were affected, 4 workers named İsa Musa el Nevaf, Aycan Kılınç, Selahattin Muhammet El Naim and Muhammet Mustafa El Naim lost their lives, and the injured construction guard was taken to hospital. It was stated that the construction started in January of this year and that 4 of the 5 containers set up in the construction site area were damaged in the incident.
CONTAINERS WERE FLUNG MORE THAN 100 METERS AWAY
With the effect of the tornado, the containers where the workers were staying were flung more than 100 meters away. While the iron bunk beds in the containers were also flung into the garden of a housing complex, the roof of a school in the same area was damaged. The moments when the tornado hit the rest facility at the viewing terrace belonging to Kepez Municipality before the construction site were also recorded with a mobile phone camera by personnel working at the facility. The footage included moments when the tornado flung tables, chairs, umbrellas and a garbage container, as well as the panic experienced by the personnel.
ARREST DECISION FOR 2 PEOPLE
Within the scope of the investigation initiated by the Antalya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the incident, 2 contractors were taken into custody. It was learned that the occupational safety specialist, who was reported as a fugitive, and the site chief were also caught by law enforcement forces on the same day. Among the suspects referred to the courthouse, contractor Mevlüt Ç. and site chief Deniz K. were arrested by the duty magistrate court they were brought before, in line with the expert report, on the charge of 'causing the death of more than one person by negligence'. Occupational safety specialist İ.A. and contractor Ş.Ç. were released under judicial control conditions.
