In a mass abduction attempt at a school in Nigeria's Kogi state, 3 people, including a 6-year-old child and the school principal, lost their lives. The attackers were thwarted by security forces.
Three people lost their lives in a mass kidnapping attempt at a school in Kogi State, central Nigeria.
Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, stated in a written statement that attackers wearing military uniforms raided a school in the Iluke Bunu area of Kogi State during an exam. Fanwo noted that the attackers, who attempted a mass kidnapping, were thwarted by security forces.
1 ATTACKER NEUTRALIZED
Fanwo reported that three people, including a 6-year-old child and the school principal, lost their lives in the incident, and security forces neutralized one attacker.
There has been a recent increase in attacks on schools in Nigeria. Most recently, on May 15, 40 students and 7 teachers were kidnapped by armed individuals in attacks on three schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
ARMED GROUPS CARRY OUT SUCH ACTIONS FOR RANSOM
Although the penalty for kidnapping in the country is death, kidnapping incidents for ransom are common. Armed groups often target villages, schools, and travelers in the northern part of the country to demand ransom.
