According to reports in the national press, the incident occurred at the Okari Jetty in the Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers state.

It was stated that a toxic gas leak occurred while many people were connecting to an oil-carrying pipeline, and those affected by the gas were poisoned.

At least 37 people lost their lives in the incident, and some individuals who fainted fell into the river and went missing.

It was noted that some people who survived the poisoning were taken to the hospital due to breathing difficulties.

Rivers State Police Spokesperson Agabe Blessing Karbalo said that those who lost their lives and were poisoned were attempting to steal oil.

Karbalo stated that an investigation has been launched into the incident.
