During the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines, students and teachers at a ceremony experienced great panic. As a small structure immediately behind the students collapsed during the earthquake, the terrifying moments were captured on camera.
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the Mindanao region in southern Philippines caused moments of terror in schools. During the earthquake, students and teachers at Mahayahay Elementary School in Malita, Davao Occidental, were in the schoolyard for a flag ceremony held on Monday morning.
As the shaking began, students fled in panic, while a small structure just behind the ceremony area in the schoolyard collapsed within seconds. The moments were captured on a bystander's mobile phone camera.
STUDENTS EXPERIENCED GREAT PANIC
In the footage, students and teachers are seen trying to move to safe areas during the earthquake, and the collapse of the structure further intensified the panic. The school administration stated that no students or teachers were injured in the incident.
TSUNAMI ALERT ISSUED IN THE REGION
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake's magnitude as 7.8, and tsunami warnings were issued for the Philippines and neighboring countries. The earthquake caused damage to many buildings and power outages in some areas.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared school holidays in the affected areas and called on citizens to follow official warnings.
