The forest fire that started in the Seydikemer district of Muğla and spread to the Kaş district of Antalya continues, with teams responding from air and land in the 8th hour. While strong winds are changing the direction of the flames, citizens and volunteers are also supporting the extinguishing efforts.
Eight hours have passed since the forest fire that started in the Seydikemer district of Muğla and progressed to the Kaş district of Antalya. Teams continue their uninterrupted intervention from the air and ground to bring the flames, which frequently change direction due to strong winds, under control.
FLAMES HAVE BEEN STRUGGLED TO BE BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL FOR 8 HOURS The fire started around 10:30 in an agricultural area near Korubükü Neighborhood in the Seydikemer district. Due to the wind, which quickly intensified, the flames spread over a wide area and advanced toward the Kaş district of Antalya.
Although 8 hours have passed since the fire started, the teams' struggle against the flames continues.
WIND MAKES INTERVENTION DIFFICULT Due to the strong wind affecting the region, the flames frequently change direction. This makes extinguishing efforts difficult, while teams are making intense efforts to bring the fire under control.
While extinguishing efforts continue from the air and ground, road-opening work is also being carried out with construction machines to facilitate teams' access to the fire zone and to stop the advance of the flames.
CITIZENS AND VOLUNTEERS ALSO SUPPORT Citizens and volunteers in the region also support the fight against the fire. Teams continue their efforts to bring the flames under control despite the strong wind.
GOVERNOR ŞAHİN AT THE FIRE ZONE While teams continue their intervention from the air and ground, Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin conducted inspections in the fire zone.
Governor Şahin stated that the fire, continuing in Muğla Seydikemer due to the wind in the morning hours, spread to the Kaş district with the strong wind, saying, "Around 10:40 in the morning, it came from the Muğla direction, from the Eşençayı direction of Seydikemer district, from the north. A northerly wind was effective, even blowing at storm levels in places. In fact, last night in Antalya, we also survived an even greater disaster at the Fisherman's Shelter. Here too, due to the wind, the fire from the Muğla direction spread to the Antalya side, to the east of Eşen River, to our Palamut and Çavdır neighborhoods in Kaş district. These neighborhoods are both large neighborhoods, former towns, and neighborhoods intertwined with the forest. Therefore, forest inventory, trees, and houses are all together. This made our job very difficult," he said.
CITIZENS DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES Emphasizing that citizens did not want to evacuate their homes, Şahin said, "Both greenhouses caught fire, and the toxic gases released from the greenhouses caused difficult moments for our personnel. Also, our citizens tried to save their homes and greenhouses. Their evacuation was also difficult for us. And the wind challenged us a lot. However, despite some losses, we largely ensured the safety of our citizens' lives and protected the majority of the houses. The fire is still ongoing now. But the wind has weakened, a sea breeze started, a contrary wind from south to north. This provided us some advantage. Currently, our security personnel are working, our Gendarmerie commander is here, all our personnel are working. The fire is far from being brought under control, but we have largely completed the process of surrounding our neighborhoods, the residential areas, which is our personnel's first priority, and clashes continue," he stated.
Governor Şahin emphasized that the air temperature rising above 30 degrees and the humidity dropping below 30 percent carry an alarming nature, saying, "Together with our General Director of Forestry and our Regional Director of Forestry, we are monitoring the process from the air. We are in constant contact with our esteemed Ministers by phone. It is a large fire; an area of approximately 10 square kilometers has been affected, and our struggle continues. You know we have a 30-30-30 rule. If the heat rises above 30 degrees, humidity drops below 30 percent, and wind speeds exceed 30 kilometers per hour, it means alarm bells are ringing for us. We have this in abundance right now. Especially this morning, the wind speed reached 40-50, even 60 kilometers per hour. This is really very difficult for us. During this period, our citizens must be very, very careful with their behavior. What do I mean by behavior? Whether it's picnics, similar activities, agricultural activities, or, say, they might do construction and use grinders. They should not engage in such activities during these periods. Because even a single spark, combined with the bellows effect, can lead us down a point of no return," he stated.
WARNING TO CITIZENS Calling on citizens to be more careful when air temperature rises, humidity drops, and wind is strong, Şahin said, "We especially ask our citizens on this matter. We are giving alarms; we make all these warnings with the code 'Urgent.' We even have WhatsApp groups. As the Antalya Governorship, we have established a mechanism involving everyone, from the Forestry Organization to the Agriculture Organization, including irrigation cooperatives, in this alarm. I can say we have made considerable progress, but even a single fire can unfortunately leave our nation facing a huge loss. Therefore, no fire should break out at all. And we should be able to extinguish any fire that does break out quickly. That's why we must act very fast. Thank God, we have no loss of life. It could have happened, because there is a very large population in this region. Citizens do not want to leave their homes because they have houses and greenhouses right next to them. We put up quite a fight; as of now, there is no loss of life. No injuries have been reported either. The colleagues are compiling the other data. It's not easy. Because the smoke hasn't cleared yet. Therefore, we cannot say where and how our damages are. But I can say that a large number of greenhouses have burned down, and there are houses we have lost, houses that burned," he said.
