9 Missing After Chinese Ship Sinks Off Japan

01.10.2014 13:16

China’s Consulate General in Osaka confirms sinking of vessel about 390 kilometers off Japan's Shimane Prefecture.

Nine people remain missing while five others have been rescued after a Chinese-registered ship sank off southwestern Japan.

China's Consulate-General in Osaka confirmed the sinking Wednesday, according to Chinese state media Xinhua.

The China Daily reported that the ship, "Lurongyu 2859," went down about 390 kilometers (242 miles) off Japan's Shimane Prefecture at about 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The Japanese coastguard said it had dispatched a patrol boat to the area where the vessel is understood to have sunk after China's search and rescue center issued a rescue request late Tuesday evening.

Search and rescue operations are still ongoing.
