In Hatay’s Reyhanlı district, it was alleged that the mobile banking account opened for 20-year-old carpentry apprentice Abdurrahman Evli by his master’s nephew so that he could receive his weekly pay was used in fake bungalow and rental car advertisements. The lawyer of Evli, who has 17 investigation files and 10 prosecution files against him and is being held in Kilis Prison serving the sentence he received in 3 cases, said that if the maximum sentence is imposed, there is a risk of up to 250 years in prison.
According to claims in Hatay, 20-year-old Abdurrahman Evli, in whose name bank accounts were opened without his knowledge, fell victim to fraud carried out through these accounts via fake rental bungalow and various advertisements published on social media. If Evli, against whom there are 17 investigation and 10 prosecution files, is given the maximum penalty, he will face up to 250 years in prison.
The life of 20-year-old carpenter's apprentice Abdurrahman Evli, living in Reyhanlı district, darkened with the mobile banking account he had opened to receive his weekly pay. Evli, who gave his phone to his master's nephew so that an account number could be opened and in whose name an account was opened, had his account number used by others, according to claims. In fake advertisements published on social media, citizens were asked to send money to the account number opened in Evli's name. In various fraud schemes such as rental bungalows and rental vehicles published on social media, Evli's IBAN number was used, and 27 fraud complaints were filed in his name from various provinces such as Sakarya, Antalya, Bursa, Ankara and Istanbul. Evli, against whom there are 17 investigation and 10 prosecution files, began serving his sentence as a convict in Kilis Prison after receiving a prison sentence in three of the files. Abdurrahman Evli's father, Harun Evli, stated that his son fell into the trap of his master's nephew and recounted that they learned the truth through notifications that began arriving 3 weeks later, saying that his son's dreams were left unfinished. Evli's lawyer Ferhat Karlı stated that if his client receives the maximum penalty from the files, he could face up to 250 years in prison, and said that Abdurrahman fell victim because GSM lines were opened in his name without his knowledge and consent.
MY SON HAS BEEN IN PRISON FOR THREE MONTHS
Harun Evli, claiming his son fell into a trap, recounted what happened and said, “My son Abdurrahman was working as a carpenter in Reyhanlı. His master's nephew told my son, ‘Abdurrahman, you work for my uncle. Let's deposit your weekly pay into your account.’ Thereupon, he offered to open my son's mobile banking. Since my son did not know how to do it, he trusted him. My son is a naive, quiet child. He doesn't even know how to go to the bank and deposit money. This person took over my son's Facebook account and mobile banking. He also got a phone line in my son's name. Now there are 27 separate files in my son's name. Because of these files, we fear that my son may face many years in prison. They played with my son's life and future. He defrauded many people using his accounts, but my son had no knowledge of these. Files began coming from different cities such as Antalya and Sakarya. In 2025, about three weeks after my son's accounts were taken over, notifications began arriving at our home. He told me, ‘Father, I don't know what these are.’ Later, when we investigated, we learned that his accounts were used by someone else. Now we are not in a position to pay the debts incurred in my son's name. My wife is bedridden at home, I have five children and I work for minimum wage. The person who put us in this situation is now walking around freely. My son was going to do his military service; he had dreams and plans for the future. Now I am afraid that all of this will be taken away from him. I want the authorities, especially, to examine the files opened in my son's name and reveal the real perpetrators. My son has been in prison for three months because of crimes he says he did not commit. While I was taking his mother to the hospital, her identity information was checked and it was said that my son was wanted. That night they took my son away. He has been in Kilis Prison for three months. We are a family trying to get by through hard work and difficulties. We are in a very difficult situation because of what happened to my son,” he said.
27 FILES, RISK OF UP TO 250 YEARS IN PRISON
Lawyer Ferhat Karlı stated that if his client Abdurrahman receives the maximum penalty from 27 files, he could face up to 250 years in prison, and said, “There are ongoing investigation and prosecution files against the defendant Abdurrahman for the crime of fraud by use of information systems. So far, we have been able to identify 17 investigation and 10 prosecution files. A verdict has been given in 3 of these files, and our client is currently in prison. If the maximum penalty for the crime is imposed, we can say that Abdurrahman could face a total of up to 250 years in prison and up to 125 days of judicial fine. GSM lines were opened in our client's name without his knowledge and consent, and accounts were created at different banks through these lines. Various investigations have been launched against our client due to transactions carried out through these accounts,” he said.
WARNING FROM LAWYER ABOUT IBAN FRAUD
Lawyer Karlı, stating that his client fell into a trap known as IBAN fraud and warning citizens against a similar trap, said, “What is at issue here are incidents known to the public as IBAN fraud. There are many citizens in our country who have suffered victimization due to such incidents. Our citizens must under no circumstances allow others to use their bank accounts, IBAN numbers and social media accounts. Money obtained from crime can be transferred through people's accounts. In order to prevent such victimization, it is of great importance that everyone protects their own bank account information and does not share it with others. Among the money entering and leaving Abdurrahman's accounts, there are transactions of high and low amounts. We state that Abdurrahman became a victim due to GSM lines opened in his name without his knowledge and consent. In order to clarify the matter, we requested the necessary information and records from the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK). As these records arrive in the ongoing investigation and prosecution files, we believe it will become clear that our client had no intent to commit the crimes in question. Taking into consideration that our client obtained no personal benefit in any file, we have submitted our opinion to the relevant courts that he should be acquitted. We continue to follow the process and the outcomes of the files,” he said.
