A horrific murder took place in Stoke Newington, one of London's most luxurious areas. 45-year-old Turkish citizen Erdal Özmen, a father of two, was shot and killed in the middle of the street on Monday night. The incident occurred at 00:18, waking nearby residents from their sleep with gunshots and screams. The police arrived at the scene shortly, but it was determined that Özmen had lost his life.
The murder of Özmen, who operated a social club in Hackney, has been recorded as the sixth fatal shooting in London this year. No one has been arrested yet.
The police stated that the incident was a targeted attack and that there was no danger to the public. However, some local residents claim it could be gang-related.
One of the witnesses, 58-year-old Liza Dodds, said, "My husband woke up to the sound of gunshots. When we looked out the window, we saw police officers performing CPR on the person lying on the ground for a long time."
Dodds, who described the area as normally quite safe and affluent, stated, "The houses are worth millions of pounds, and bankers and lawyers usually live here. Everyone knows each other; such an event is unexpected."
Another witness, Rosa Gilbert, said, "A few minutes after the gunshots, a large number of police and ambulances arrived. There was a great panic, and screams were heard."
Another resident named Anneli Knight expressed, "It is being talked about as gang-related, so it’s not a situation that directly affects us. But it is unsettling for something like this to happen here."
Paul Orris said, "I heard three gunshots at night; I thought it was fireworks at first. Shortly after, I heard police sirens."
As the police continue their investigation, the rising gun violence across London is worrying the local community.
