According to a statement from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), a 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred off Mindanao island in the south of the country. The tremor, recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers around 07:37 local time, was followed by a tsunami warning for coastal areas. It was reported that the quake, which caused widespread panic, led to material damage in some regions. Local authorities stated that efforts are ongoing to determine possible casualties.

DIFFERENT STATEMENTS ON EARTHQUAKE MAGNITUDE 

Meanwhile, various official agencies issued different statements regarding the earthquake's magnitude. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced the tremor was 7.0 magnitude, while Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) declared the earthquake magnitude as 7.7.
