A local council member in Northamptonshire, England, was forced to resign after allegedly attempting to blow up a neighbor's cat. Footage of the incident sparked significant outrage on social media.
It was revealed that James Garnor, a member of the Whittlebury Parish Council, tested a remote-controlled explosive he placed in a bird feeder on an 11-year-old tabby cat named Suki. The incident, which occurred in April 2023, resulted in the cat's whiskers being burned.
The cat's owner, Nikki, stated in an interview with The Telegraph, "Suki used to be a very affectionate cat. She would sit in our laps for hours and play with us. Now, due to the trauma, she won't even come near us."
The police, who launched an investigation into the incident, were unable to take any legal action due to a lack of sufficient evidence. Instead, the incident was classified as "anti-social behavior."
The event caused debates in the village. While some residents pointed out the damage cats cause to bird feeders, others argued that it is unacceptable for a public official to engage in such behavior.
A spokesperson for the Whittlebury Parish Council stated, "We have accepted Garnor's resignation. We take animal welfare very seriously and understand the public's concerns."
Animal rights advocates expressed concern over the recent increase in violence against animals, calling on authorities to implement stricter measures.
