The container ship named "KAPPA," which experienced a steering failure in the Bosphorus, ran aground off Yeniköy, just meters from a waterfront mansion. While Bosphorus traffic was suspended in both directions, the vessel was refloated and rescued by tugboats after a lengthy effort by rescue teams. It was revealed that the same ship had also malfunctioned in 2022.
The container ship named "KAPPA," which experienced a rudder failure in the Bosphorus, ran aground off Sarıyer Yeniköy. The ship stopped just meters from the mansion, narrowly preventing a potential disaster.
TRAFFIC STOPPED, TEAMS DEPLOYED
After the 148-meter-long vessel, sailing from Russia to Kocaeli, lost control, teams from the Coastal Safety Directorate were directed to the area. For security reasons, ship traffic in the Bosphorus was temporarily suspended in both directions.
RESCUED AFTER A PROLONGED EFFORT
Following examinations by Coastal Safety teams and divers, the ship was refloated and removed from its location with the coordination of the Istanbul Vessel Traffic Services Center, using tugs Kurtarma-5, Kurtarma-6, and Kurtarma-8.
SAME SHIP HAD PREVIOUSLY MALFUNCTIONED
It was learned that the ship, which entered the Bosphorus after loading cargo from the Black Sea, had also experienced an engine failure off Kandilli in 2022, halting Bosphorus traffic at that time as well.
