Alice Weidel, co-leader of Germany's AfD, which continues to rise in the polls, announced that if they come to power, they will take steps that will fundamentally affect the country's relations with the European Union. Weidel said they aim to exit the Euro and return to the German Mark, abolish Schengen, close the borders, and send migrants whose protection status has ended back to their countries.
Alice Weidel, co-chair of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which is climbing to the top of the polls in Germany, has announced that if they come to power, they will make radical changes that will profoundly shake the country's ties with the European Union.
RETURN OF THE MARK INSTEAD OF THE EURO
At the forefront of the AfD's most controversial promises are economic and monetary policies. Weidel argues that the common currency, the Euro, has severely damaged the German economy and is increasingly eroding the people's wealth, emphasizing that Germany had a much stronger structure in the era when it used its own national currency, the Mark. Weidel stated that one of their first goals if they form a government would be to exit the Euro and completely overhaul monetary policy.
SCHENGEN TO BE ABOLISHED, BORDERS TO BE CLOSED
The party leader, adopting an uncompromising stance on border security and the asylum crisis, stated that the current open-border policies would be brought to an immediate end. Weidel announced their plan to abolish the Schengen free movement agreement and completely close national borders, adding that Syrians and other migrants whose protection status has ended would be sent back to their countries without delay. Weidel's plans also include making the requirements for obtaining German citizenship more difficult and accelerating deportation procedures.
HARSH CRITICISM OF POLITICAL RIVALS AND CLIMATE POLICIES
In his statements, Weidel directly targeted his political rivals, accusing the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Social Democratic Party (SPD) administrations of breaking their promises to the public and deliberately mismanaging the country. The AfD leader, who firmly opposes the ban on internal combustion engines and environmental policies focused on human-induced climate change, claimed that his party is determined to implement these radical changes by taking power first in the states and then at the federal level.
