After the horrific moments, which ended when bystanders intervened and sparked a huge uproar on social media, the Afyonkarahisar Municipality took action and announced that the attacking officer had been suspended from duty.
The incident that took place yesterday on Bankalar Street in Afyonkarahisar city center stirred the consciences of onlookers. Hüseyin Saka (40), a mentally disabled man who makes a living by selling cotton candy, was warned by municipal police teams conducting inspections in the area to remove his stall.
HE KICKED AND HIT HIM ON THE NECK WITH A WATER BOTTLE
A dispute broke out between Saka, who has a disability, and the municipal police teams after he reacted to the warning not to sell. In the scuffle that quickly escalated, a municipal police officer kicked and punched Saka, who is mentally disabled. Unable to contain his anger, the officer struck Saka hard on the neck area with the water bottle he was holding. At the moment of the incident, another municipal police personnel tried to remove Saka from the street by grabbing his arm, while another officer intervened to stop the attacker. The brawl was ended with the harsh reactions and intervention of citizens around.
STATEMENT FROM THE MUNICIPALITY: HE WAS SUSPENDED FROM DUTY
After the scandalous moments were recorded by a citizen with a mobile phone camera and shared on social media, the images quickly went viral and led to growing reactions. Following the developments, Afyonkarahisar Municipality issued a statement, announcing that an administrative investigation has been initiated against the municipal police officer who used violence and that the officer has been immediately suspended from duty.
